Senior State Counsel at Attorney General's Office Faena Fayaz has been granted conditional release when presented at Criminal Court for her remand hearing.

Faena, along with her husband, were arrested last night in a drug operation carried out by Police.

Criminal Court placed Faena's husband, Azhaadh, in remand in custody for 15 days.

A Police Media Official stated today that of the two persons arrested last night, the Criminal Court has placed the man in custody for 15 days as the investigation proceeds. The 33 year old woman was granted conditional release, Police said.

While Faena and Azhaadh's apartment was searched under a court order, Police have not disclosed any details regarding the case.

The two were arrested after a search of their residence in an operation carried out by Police's Drug Enforcement Department, Mihaaru News reports.

However, reports indicate that drugs were not found in Faena's possession. Faena also tested negative for drug use.

It is further reported that 33g of diamorphine had been found on a table in the apartment. Since the quantity qualifies as drug trafficking, a conviction could lead to a life sentence.

Faena is the head of the Human Rights and International Affairs Division of the AG Office. She also temporarily led the Civil Rights Office at the AG Office when it was first established by this administration in 2023.

Faena began her career at the AG Office on September 12, 2013 as a Deputy State Attorney. In 2014, she was promoted to State Attorney and in 2019, to Senior State Counsel.
