President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has visited Alifu Dhaalu Atoll’s Kumburudhoo, marking the first presidential visit to the island in 16 years.
The island, home to around 600 people, was last visited by a president in 2009, when former president Mohamed Nasheed made a trip there.
President Muizzu, who is touring islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, met with Kumburudhoo residents today and gave them the opportunity to raise questions and share their concerns.
The first to speak at the discussion was Kumburudhoo Council President Mohamed Yazmy, who noted that despite three administrations since 2009, no president had visited the island until now.
“After serving as president, no president has come to this island for 16 years,” Yazmy said, thanking President Muizzu for meeting residents in person.
During the meeting, residents presented their needs and development priorities to the president.
The visit also saw the opening of a long awaited football stadium a milestone for Kumburudhoo’s youth, who said it fulfilled a dream they had held for years. Many noted that after a decade without a proper field, they could finally return to playing football.
