President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Uthuru Athafaru is to fall under the jurisdiction of Hangnaameedhoo, with the island to be developed for tourism use. The President also stated that Alikoi Island will also be developed as a tourist island for regional use.

During his meeting with Hangnaameedhoo residents today, President Muizzu said that he will make arrangements to further boost tourism in the island, as Hangnaameedhoo has heavily progressed as a tourist island.

The President also highlighted the fact that Hangnaameedhoo generates good revenue for the state via local tourism, along with plans to make arrangements and a resolution for Uthuru Athafaru to fall under Hangnaameedhoo's jurisdiction.

President Muizzu stated this decision was to aid and further drive local tourism in a positive manner. He also said that aid will be given to develop the island for tourist use.

The President went on to say that Alifu Dhaalu is an atoll that does not have that many islands for tourism use. He stated that it was due to this that Alikoi Island will be arranged for tourists that stay in Hangnaameedhoo and other islands in the atoll for their enjoyment.

As per the President, the island will not be given to any specific island or people. The island will be under the watchful eye of the Tourism Ministry, said the President.

"This island will not be given to anyone. It will be under the Tourism Ministry, with Alikoi Island, adjacent islands and islands in the region being accessible for residents to bring guests. It will be designated as a special island," said President Muizzu.

Regulations surrounding the use of the island will be announced by the Tourism Ministry, as was stated by the President.

Development of Alikoi Island as a resort had been previously approved, but the project came to a halt after the island was not handed over to the developer. A court case was subsequently filed over the matter, leaving the island’s development at a standstill.

Alikoi was one of the 17 islands selected for development at the time.
