Criminal Court has ordered a man accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives in his boxers to be held in remand pending trial.

Ahmed Zahid, 50, was arrested after 250 grams of Mefedrone were found in his possession.

He was initially remanded in custody for 30 days last month. However, as that deadline expired, he was produced before the court a second time to determine his remand and the judge extended his custody until the final hearing.

According to police and customs documents cited in the court order, the drugs were found inside his boxer shorts. However, Zahid told the court that the police were not attempting to find the real person involved in the case.

Zahid was arrested at Velana International Airport. The man, who has been arrested in various cases in the past, also tested positive for drugs in his urine test.
