PNC parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah has stated that MDP MPs who took part in the Friday rally that obstructed the duty of Police officers should lose their seats, with the law to be reformed as such.
During today's Parliamentary sitting, in discussing the amendments submitted by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) to the Land Transport Act, Falah stated that the MDP rally was "beyond dangerous". He also said that during the rally, some MP's had confronted the Police "in a manner we have never seen before".
"I was stricken with grief as I saw Kendhoo MP (Mauroof Zakir) obstructing Police duty as he was in a barricade," said Falah.
"In all honesty, if any sitting MP were to commit such an act, we need to bring about amendments to the law and Constitution. Even if they are an MP, they should lose their seat if they do something of that degree, Speaker."
Falah stated that if the law does not state as such, civilians will view it as discrimination between MPs and the public.
"And so, we need to bring about amendments and changes to the law in the coming days," said Falah.
An MP can lose their seat if they were to commit a criminal offense that puts them in jail for a year or more. The other way an MP would lose their seat is if they were to leave the political party they were elected through, as was passed by Parliament. However, a case has been referred to the Supreme Court in order to determine whether this change is against the Constitution.
