Maldives Police Service has defended its response to Friday night’s opposition MDP rally in Male', stating that the use of force was carried out strictly under the powers granted by law and relevant regulations.

Police have come under criticism for allegedly using excessive force, including the deployment of a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), a sonic weapon that emits high-pitched sounds. MDP’s legal team argued that no official guidelines exist for its use, making it unlawful for the police to deploy.

In a statement issued in both Dhivehi and English, the police said their actions were in full compliance with the Police Service Act, the Regulation on Acquiring, Possessing, and Using Weapons, and the Regulation on Police Use of Power and Discretion.

“We affirm that all fundamental principles governing the use of force were fully upheld in managing the situation and restoring order,” the statement read.

Police said the rally, which began at Artificial Beach, was stopped after participants attempted to take the rally onto Majeedhee Magu, outside the agreed route. Officers said protesters ignored repeated instructions to remain within the approved path and instead dismantled barricades, confronted police, and attempted to seize police-issued shields.

“One such shield was taken by the participants, constituting an unlawful act,” the statement said.

Eight individuals were arrested during the protest last night.

Police said the gathering was dispersed because it violated the conditions of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act by attempting to proceed outside designated areas and losing its peaceful nature.

“The law enforcement service has used the force permitted by law to disperse the gathering after giving advice and warnings with patience and professionalism,” the police said.
