Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ibrahim Naeem, has resigned after 14 years of service.

The EPA was renamed the Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) in August this year.

In a post on X today, the authority expressed its appreciation for Naeem’s long-standing service, noting that he had served as Director General since 2011. The post also wished him continued success and acknowledged his valuable contributions to the agency.

Naeem, an environmental expert, led the agency’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) unit and worked actively to raise awareness and prevent environmental degradation in the Maldives.

As part of changes to the management structure of the ERA, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided that the Chief Administrator would serve as the head of the authority. Hassan Mohammed, formerly the State Minister of Environment, was appointed to the role.

The EPA was originally established on December 18, 2008, and operated under the guidance of a special governing board appointed by the President, consisting of seven members. However, following the recent restructuring, the agency now functions directly under the Ministry of Environment.
