President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Agriculture Minister Dr Aishath Rameela for appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The nomination comes as the term of current HRCM member Mariyam Muna expires on November 30.

From among the applicants for the position, President Muizzu submitted only Rameela’s name for parliamentary approval.

The President’s letter was read in Parliament today and referred to the Human Rights Committee for review.

Dr Rameela, who began her career as a nurse in 1990, has twice served as State Minister of Health and earned a PhD in Social Sciences from Malaysia in 2010.

She resigned from her position as Agriculture Minister last December, citing health reasons.
