Rented parking slots on the streets of Male' have been canceled and made available to all members of the public from today onwards.
The government has decided that all four-wheeler parking spaces in Male' will now be made available to the the public.
Transport Ministry on 8 September ordered that the terms of existing leased parking lots should not be extended, and no new rentals should be issued.
Attorney General’s Office advised the council that renting out spaces allocated for four-wheeler parking was against the law, and Transport Ministry had also notified the council the same.
As a key measure to address vehicle congestion, the council said members of the public may park in any designated space, except where signs indicate otherwise.
According to the latest data, the council had rented out 1,000 parking spaces to individuals and taxis. Private cars were charged MVR 1,500 per month, while taxis paid MVR 700 per month.
