Police have said they received reports that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) may allow criminal groups to join its rally on Friday night in an attempt to disrupt Male'.
In a statement, the police said the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and its amendments govern the conduct of peaceful gatherings. Police said it prioritizes the security of such assemblies, as well as the safety of roads and public spaces along approved routes.
However, police said they received information suggesting that some groups planned to deviate from the authorized route, split into separate factions, and involve criminal elements to disturb public order and damage property in Male'.
Police called on the public not to support actions that violate the Act or threaten public safety.
“We will not allow anyone to disrupt or damage property in Male',” the statement said.
The rally has been given permission to proceed along Boduthakurufaanu Magu and six major roads in Male'.
