Parliament opens applications for Media Commission membership

Parliament has announced that applications are now open for the posts of the three members to be appointed by Parliament for the Media and Broadcasting Commission.

The commission will consist of a total of seven members. Of these, four will be elected by a vote among media outlets, while the remaining three will be appointed by Parliament. Each member will serve a five-year term.

The deadline for applications is 12:00 p.m. on October 12. Applicants must submit an affidavit, a criminal and debt record form, a copy of their identity card, curriculum vitae and educational certificates along with the application.

Requirements for the position:

  • Must be Maldivian, 30 years of age or older.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in journalism, broadcasting, policymaking, or management, or have five years of experience in media.
  • Must not be a responsible person or editor of a media outlet.
  • Must not hold any elected or appointed position.
  • Must not be a member of a political party.
  • Must not have been convicted of a hadd offence.
  • Must not have been convicted of drug trafficking.
  • Must not have been convicted of child sexual abuse.
  • Must not have been convicted of fraud or bribery.
  • Must not be a business owner in the field of communication or media services.

The media vote for selecting the remaining four members will be conducted by the Elections Commission. The application window for these positions is open until October 4, and the election will be held on October 11.

A total of 353 media outlets are eligible to vote in this election.
