Police have begun towing motorcycles parked on pavements around the first housing units built in Hulhumalé Phase 1.
This evening, several motorcycles were towed from areas near the flats, including spaces beneath ground floor staircases.
The Hulhumalé flat area has designated parking zones specifically for motorcycles. Residents have also been informed that vehicles are not allowed in the spaces between buildings. These rules are clearly displayed on signage throughout the area. However, it has become increasingly common for residents to park their vehicles around the flats, leading to growing complaints from pedestrians.
Additionally, some vacant areas near the flats have turned into illegal parking spots for cars and pickups.
Towing of vehicles that obstructing pedestrian pathways was resumed about six months ago, following a long pause in enforcement within Hulhumalé.
Towed vehicles can be reclaimed by their owners after 48 hours. However, if the vehicle has an outstanding traffic violation, it will only be released after 15 days.
