Observers and monitors being sought for Media Regulatory Commission election

The Elections Commission (EC) has announced the opening of applications for observers and monitors for the upcoming Media Regulatory Commission election, scheduled to take place on October 11th.

The deadline for submitting applications is Thursday, October 2nd.

Applications for observers can be submitted via email to [email protected], while monitor applications must be submitted through the my.elections.gov.mv portal. Monitor applications must be submitted by a designated focal point on behalf of the applicant.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not be involved in any official election duties on behalf of the EC
  • Must not be a candidate contesting in the election
  • Must have read and agreed to abide by the EC’s Code of Conduct for election participants
  • Must be employed by a registered radio or TV station, newspaper, or magazine
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

The media will elect four members to the Media Regulatory Commission: two representing online media and two representing broadcast media. The remaining three members of the seven-member commission will be appointed by parliament.

The formation of the commission follows the passing of the relevant bill by the government-majority Parliament on September 16. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the bill two days later, bringing the new law into effect.
