Former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood launched two books today, each addressing significant legal topics: Zakat-al-mal and Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.
The books were unveiled this evening at a ceremony held at the Maldives National Library. The event was officiated by President of the Maldives Law Institute and former Prosecutor General, Ahmed Muizzu.
During the ceremony, Suood stated that the book on fundamental rights is the first volume in a series focused on the constitutional system of the Maldives. It explores the purpose of each right granted under the Constitution, the rationale for its guarantee, and includes all relevant court decisions in the Maldives regarding each right.
“I think it will be almost 100 percent complete in terms of how the courts have interpreted and applied every article of the Constitution so far,” Suood said.

He also noted that the book highlights approaches to constitutional interpretation.
His book on Zakat-al-mal aims to address the common confusion surrounding zakat calculations. It explains the correct procedures and clarifies misunderstandings frequently faced by those wishing to fulfill this religious obligation.

Following the launch, Muizzu remarked that while the Maldivian legal system has undergone major changes with the introduction of the Constitution, Suood’s book on fundamental rights—comprising over 500 pages across 52 chapters—is a remarkable contribution.
Both books are now available for purchase through the Maldives Law Institute.
Suood has previously authored several other works on various legal issues.
