Th. Thimarafushi MP Ahmed Riyaz has proposed that residents from other islands be granted the opportunity to relocate to Thimarafushi.
Thimarafushi was the final stop during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's recent visit to Thaa atoll.
In a meeting held with residents, Riyaz highlighted that there is a large area of reclaimed land on the island which has been left unused.
He proposed that housing units be constructed on this land, and an opportunity extended to residents from other islands who wish to relocate to Thimarafushi.
"Some of my close friends also expressed interest in bringing in new residents to Thimarafushi. I believe this would present further advancement to us, as well as those who move here, which is why I am proposing this," he said.
Riyaz expressed confidence that his suggestion will meet the President's approval.
President Muizzu also announced yesterday that the government urges those living in islands with low populations with few resources to move to larger islands. He, however, reiterated that the government wishes to do this only with the consent of residents.
The President stated that urbanization, or moving people from smaller islands to larger islands with more facilities and opportunities, is a key policy of this administration.
As of now, residents of three islands have requested moving to larger islands. These are V. Rakeedhoo, M. Raiymandhoo and Kim'bidhoo.
