An agreement to build a causeway connecting the Thaa Atoll islands of Dhiyamigili, Madifushi, and Ufuriyaa was signed today.

The Ministry of Construction awarded the project to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The agreement was signed by State Minister Hassan Rasheed on behalf of the Ministry, and MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhee signed on behalf of the company.

The signing took place during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Th. Dhiyamigili, as part of his ongoing tour of Thaa Atoll. Speaking at the event, the President described the causeway as the island's most significant development project, calling it “an important step towards consolidation.”

President Muizzu stated that the causeway project will be completed within 18 months (one and a half years).

He also provided updates on the Veymandoo–Kinbidhoo bridge project, assuring that its completion is expected soon. With land reclamation work already finished in Kinbidhoo, the contract for Veymandoo was officially awarded yesterday.

Veymandoo, the capital island of Thaa Atoll, hosts a number of essential services. The causeway linking Veymandoo and Kinbidhoo is expected to greatly enhance inter-island transportation and access to services.

MTCC was also awarded the contract to build a causeway between Muli and Naalaafushi. This project includes a 565-metre-long causeway and a 105-metre bridge, which will be constructed in three segments.

Emphasizing the government’s policy on population consolidation, President Muizzu reiterated support for relocating residents from smaller islands to larger ones—only if it aligns with the wishes of the communities involved.

The President also confirmed that the Kinbidhoo–Veymandoo causeway will be developed under an investor finance model, led by Ela Tourism Integrated Development.
