Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed said today that judges are to set a higher standard of conduct when compared to other state institution leaders.

During the oath taking ceremony of Ibrahim Mahir to Chief Judge of the Family Court, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee said that the responsibility of judges is not an easy thing and that they are to uphold many guidelines. He went on to say that judges are to set an example to others, with them needing to have restraint in various matters.

"Judges need to have a separate standard from other state institution leaders. And so, judges need to limit their behavior and relationships towards others," said the Chief Justice.

The Chief Justice has urged judges to uphold respect in their dealings with those who appear before the courts, stressing that judicial authority should not be exercised in a manner that diminishes people.

He stated that the power of judges is defined strictly by law and should not be wielded over others as a form of dominance. “The only power vested in a judge is that which is prescribed by law,” he said.

The Chief Justice further underscored that maintaining professional ethics is essential for strengthening public confidence in the judiciary.

"Nothing outside of that should be done in the courtroom," as was said by the Chief Justice.

As per the Chief Justice, having a difference of opinion with other judges in this line of work is not an issue. He also stated that even though opinions may not line up, the aim should be to come to reasonable conclusions on matters.

The decision to appoint Chief Judge Mahir, who has served in the Civil and Family Court, to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was made today.
