President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government is exploring sustainable measures to generate economic benefits for the Omadhoo Island Council through the development of two uninhabited islands under its jurisdiction.
Speaking to residents of Thaa Atoll Omadhoo during his tour of Thaa Atoll, the President said that while the law prohibits resort development on islands under council jurisdiction, the government is considering ways for councils to share in the revenue if such islands are developed.
He added that guest houses and city hotels are not subject to the same restrictions, offering additional growth opportunities.
President Muizzu noted proposals from island councils to secure formal agreements ensuring a share of revenue from uninhabited islands. The administration is reviewing the feasibility of these arrangements to ensure benefits reach the councils directly.
Addressing local infrastructure, the President acknowledged delays in water and sewerage projects and assured residents that the works would be completed, even if existing contracts need to be terminated.
He also confirmed that the ongoing school development project will be completed in time for the next academic year.
The 2026 state budget will include allocations for a new mosque, a volleyball court, turf replacement at the football grounds, and expansion of sports facilities to support year-round training.
Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, together with the Road Development Corporation (RDC), signed an agreement to commence road development on the island.
