To solve the land shortage in M. Naalaafushi, MTCC has been contracted to reclaim 15 hectares of land on the island.

During his recent visit to Meemu atoll, M. Naalaafushi, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu awarded the land reclamation and harbour extension projects to MTCC, with contracts signed on-site. While speaking to residents, the President highlighted that the land reclamation was one of his key promises to the people of Naalaafushi.

In line with that commitment, he announced that the amount of land to be dredged would exceed the island’s current size, 15 hectares compared to the island’s existing 12 hectares.

“An additional 15 hectares are being dredged. So once completed, the reclaimed land will be larger than the current island,” President said.

He also confirmed that both the land reclamation and jetty development projects would begin before the end of the year.

In May, work began on another major infrastructure project, the construction of a causeway connecting M. Muli and M. Naalaafushi. The President described the causeway as one of the most significant developments for both islands. He said it would ease the daily challenges faced by students commuting between the two islands and would also boost Muli’s economic activity and access to essential services.

President Muizzu acknowledged that delays in the causeway project were mainly due to necessary technical adjustments, but expressed hope that the project would now be completed ahead of schedule.

The Muli–Naalaafushi causeway project, overseen by MTCC, includes a 565-metre link between the islands, featuring a 105-metre bridge divided into three segments.
