President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said today that the current administration is holding discussions in order to find a sustainable solution to purchase fish for MVR 20.
During his Meemu Atoll visit, the President met with Dhiggaru residents and said that due to them being a developed fishing island, the residents would clearly have some concerns they'd want to express.
The President said that solutions can be reached regarding the development and strengthening of the fishing industry by listening to the fishermen themselves.
My most important pledge to fishermen is buying fish at MVR 20. This is something that needs to be done sustainably. Just saying that it's going to be MVR 20 from tomorrow onwards will not be enough.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
As per the President, discussions with MIFCO are underway in order for fish to be bought for MVR 20. He also said that the reason it's taking a while to become reality is due to the meetings.
When the current administration was elected, there was a backlog of MVR 150 million that was not given to fishermen from the previous administration. However, the President stated that within 48 hours of fish being weighed, the funds were organized and distributed from December 2025 onwards.
Fishermen met with President Muizzu in May, with them requesting the price to buy fish be increased to MVR 20.
President Muizzu referred to that meeting and stated that he would honor his pledge. He also said that the government is working toward that end as well.
The president said the price increase would be substantive, not merely symbolic. He added that the policy would be implemented only once all arrangements are in place and with guarantees that it would not be stopped.
"We are doing a lot of work in order to implement it. We will make sure we achieve it."
