69 children added under single parent care last month

National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has said that MVR 4.9 million was disbursed last month to children under the care of single parents.

In a social media post, the agency said 69 children were newly registered in August, bringing the total number of children receiving assistance to 4,901.

NSPA also registered 30 single mothers and fathers during the month, raising the total to 2,870.

The agency said MVR 4,905,000 was paid out to children of single parents in August alone. Single parents receive an allowance of MVR 2,000, with an additional MVR 1,000 for each child after the first.

NSPA also provides allowances for children in foster care. Four new foster parents were registered in August, bringing the total to 97. At present, 130 children are in foster care, with MVR 178,500 paid out last month in support.
