President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to reclaim land from the lagoon of Faafu atoll Billehdhoo as part of harbour development works on the island.
Speaking during his tour of the atoll, President Muizzu said Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which has been contracted for the harbour project, would also undertake the reclamation.
He said the government and local council would determine the most beneficial use of the new land, with an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to guide how much could be reclaimed.
“The land will be reclaimed from the corner of the lagoon, with the minimum space taken,” he said.
The President added that the reclamation budget would be included in next year’s state budget and that MTCC would complete the work before leaving the island.
