Rakeedhoo residents request relocation to another island

President Muizzu said any relocation would be subject to wide consultation under the government’s population consolidation policy, and could only go ahead with the backing of at least 80 percent of residents.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the public interest, telling residents of Vaavu atoll Rakeedhoo that no policy would be introduced at its expense.

Speaking at a meeting held at the island’s harbour this morning, President Muizzu was joined by members of the island council, the Women’s Development Committee and local residents, who raised key community concerns.

One issue highlighted was the desire of some residents to relocate to another island.

President Muizzu said any relocation would be subject to wide consultation under the government’s population consolidation policy, and could only go ahead with the backing of at least 80 percent of residents.

He added that the island’s growing local tourism sector would also be factored into any decision.

As part of his visit, the president inaugurated a new Bank of Maldives ATM on the island. With the launch, every inhabited island in Vaavu atoll now has access to BML services, in line with President Muizzu’s pledge to expand banking across the country.
