The State had appealed the High Court ruling to overturn an 11 year prison sentence against former President Abdulla Yameen, which led to his release, and a retrial order. The Supreme Court has now scheduled a hearing in this appeal case for September 29.
The agenda published on the Supreme Court website indicates that the first hearing in the case will be held at 11:30am on September 29.
The case will be heard by Judges Aisha Shujune Mohamed, Mohamed Ibrahim and Abdulla Hameed.
In 2022, Criminal Court found Yameen guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in the leasing of V. Aarah. He received a seven year prison sentence for money laundering, and four years for accepting bribes.
Yameen appealed this at the High Court, which overturned both rulings and ordered retrials.
In addition to Yameen, former MP for Felidhoo Yoosuf Naeem was also sentenced to three years in prison in the same case. This ruling was also overturned, with a retrial ordered.
The State has appealed the Yoosuf Naeem case as well at the Supreme Court. The court has scheduled hearings in this case to be conducted simultaneously with Yameen's case.
