Journalists took to the streets tonight as Parliament passed the controversial Media Bill with 60 votes during an extraordinary session. The bill, introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar, faced strong opposition from the media community throughout the day.
Protesters gathered near Republic Square after demonstrating inside the Parliament premises since morning, demanding the bill’s withdrawal. Members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) also joined the protests, voicing their opposition to the bill.
One of the most contentious provisions, granting the President the power to appoint the Chair of the Media Commission, was removed. The commission will now include three members appointed by Parliament and four elected by media representatives. Still, journalists remain concerned about potential political influence, given Parliament's role in appointments.
The bill also scrapped earlier provisions allowing fines of up to MVR 25,000 against individual journalists and investigations into cases up to a year old. These changes were made following recommendations from the Attorney General’s Office in response to journalist concerns.
Despite the amendments, press freedom groups remain critical. A total of 22 organizations, including "Reporters Without Borders", have called for the bill to be withdrawn, and over 150 journalists have signed a petition opposing it.
