Two individuals arrested during a protest against the Media Control Bill have been released without charge.
The arrests took place during a protest near Parliament, where police dispersed the crowd. Among those detained were journalist and Media Council member Leevan Ali Naseer, and taxi driver Shamin. Police claimed the arrests were made for allegedly obstructing government employees in the course of their duties.
Both Leevan and Shamin were held in police custody for two to three hours before being released unconditionally.
The controversial bill, which was introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar on behalf of the government, was passed in an extraordinary session of Parliament, despite strong opposition from journalists and media organizations.
The government claims the amended Media Bill reflects journalists' input and protects press freedom, but the Journalists' Association still calls for its full withdrawal, warning it could limit free expression and media independence.
The Journalists' Association continues to call for the complete withdrawal of the bill, citing ongoing concerns about its potential to restrict freedom of expression and press independence.
