Parliament Speaker: Democracy is not saying or writing whatever you want

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated today that democracy is not about "talking or writing whatever you want," emphasizing that it must function within established rules and principles.

In his message marking International Democracy Day, Abdul Raheem said democracy is a system where power originates from and remains with the people. He stressed that it is the duty of every Maldivian citizen to uphold the rules and values of democratic governance. 

“Democracy is not about doing whatever you want. It is not about writing whatever you want,” he said. “Democracy means acting according to rules and principles.”

He also highlighted the importance of participating in elections, urging citizens to exercise their right to vote as a key responsibility in a democratic society.
