The Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee has replaced several PNC members and appointed new ones while reviewing the controversial Media Regulation Bill.
The newly appointed members are Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau, Dhidhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, and Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh. The committee removed Thulusdhoo MP Ibrahim Naseem, Felidhoo MP Adam Zahir, and Mulah MP Ibrahim Naufal.
The committee also includes two members from parties other than PNC; Maafannu North MNP MP Mohamed Nazim and Galolhu South MDP MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
The Independent Institutions Committee is currently examining the Media Regulation Bill, submitted by Independent Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakuru. Journalists have expressed concerns that the bill infringes on press freedom.
The government, however, maintains that proposed amendments by the Attorney General’s Office will significantly alter the bill, addressing many of the concerns raised.
