Journalist Hiriga Ahmed Zahir tendered his resignation today from the position of Editors Guild President.
Hiriga said in a statement via X that most of the members on the Editors Guild committee are high ranking officials of the current government. Due to this, the guild is in a state of paralysis, he said.
Hiriga also stated that it is a major worry that no one from the guild is speaking out against the current challenges the world of journalism and media as a whole are undergoing.
"As such, my conscience won't allow me to lead such an organization and so I will be resigning as President of the Editors Guild," as per the statement.
International organizations have expressed worry and concern over the Media Regulation Bill that is currently in Parliament. The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) is conducting various activities against the act.
MJA, which was established four years ago, has 7 ExCo members.
