The 'Media Fendaa' - a set of stands - opened in front of the President's Office last May has been officially discontinued, citing unauthorized use.
The Media Fendaa was launched on May 29 by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. At the time, the President's Office said that the purpose of these stands is to facilitate easy access for media to information on ongoings at the President's Office and nearby ministries during official hours.
The President's Office said today that the guidelines on use of the Media Fendaa had been published on the office's official website. They said that official permits to use the Media Fendaa have been issued to journalists proposed by media outlets.
The Media Fendaa is now being repeatedly used by persons claiming to be journalists to conduct activities other than those approved, the President's Office said. They stated that this has led to complaints from journalists who hold permits, who have said that the actions of such persons prevent them from using the Media Fendaa for its designated purpose.
The President's Office further said that activities at the Media Fendaa - which falls within the Green Zone - which violate general social norms and disrupt public order are inconveniencing individuals who visit nearby offices to access public services.
They stated that use of the Media Fendaa in a manner that violates the restrictions set for the Green Zone is a violation.
The President's Office said that the Media Fendaa is being permanently shut down as it has not been used for its intended purpose over the past three months. Alternative arrangements will be made for journalists who wish to cover events and news from the area, the office said.
While the President's Office has claimed unauthorized use of Media Fendaa, journalists recently protested there against the media regulation bill.
