Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has temporarily reopened a section of the parking area at Velana International Airport (VIA) that was closed in July last year to prepare for the launch of the new terminal.

The parking zones on both the east and west sides of the airport were closed on July 26, 2024. They have remained closed until now as part of the preparations for the terminal's opening.

In a circular issued on Thursday, MACL stated that the parking area located on the north side of the new terminal does not meet the required safety and security standards.

To ease difficulties faced by airport staff and passengers, MACL has now designated a temporary parking area in front of Terminal 1. This new arrangement comes with its own set of parking rules and is intended to serve as a short-term solution.

For a permanent fix, MACL plans to develop a dedicated parking zone on the eastern side of the airport. Parking is already available in that area, and several improvements are planned to enhance accessibility:

  • Installation of traffic lights on the link road for smoother access to the eastern parking zone from Malé and Hulhumalé.
  • Expansion of bus services between Malé, Hulhumalé, and the airport.
  • Enhanced ferry services to support commuter travel.
