A Maldivian man who suffered burns in an explosion that occurred in Germany on September 8 has succumbed to injuries.
Fayyaz Daud, 36, B. Thulhaadhoo, passed away while receiving treatment in Germany for injuries sustained in the explosion.
Daud married a German national about five years ago. The couple first lived in the Maldives, and moved to Germany around December last year due to his father-in-law falling ill.
Mihaaru News cites a close friend of Daud as saying that the explosion was triggered when sparks from cutting a steel tank ignited a nearby chemical container, resulting in a fire that severely burned Daud.
They said that Daud had been alone at the time of the incident.
Daud suffered serious burns to his arms, legs and face. He was first placed on life support, but showed improvement later, the friend said.
Experiencing unbearable pain, Daud was placed on ventilator support again, the friend said, adding they had received news of Daud's death this afternoon.
Following the incident, some of Daud's family members tried to travel to Germany but were initially unable to obtain visas from the Maldives office. According to the friend, they were later informed during a second attempt that the visas would be issued within this week.
"Had the government assisted, at least one family member would have been able to go there, wouldn't they? I even went there and requested, explaining what had happened. Even then, they said there is no way," the friend said.
Daud leaves behind a young son and wife. His family had planned to visit the Maldives in December this year.
