Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) will host a forum tonight to raise public awareness and discuss concerns regarding the Media Regulation Bill currently before Parliament.

The forum will take place at 8:45 pm at Artificial Beach, with legal experts and professionals in journalism scheduled to speak.

Members of the public will also be able to share their views during an open mic session.

MJA said the initiative is part of its efforts to inform the public about the concerns regarding the proposed bill, which was submitted by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakuru, an independent member of Parliament.

Journalists have been distributing leaflets, organizing awareness programs, and sharing information on social media to highlight their concerns.

Despite opposition from journalists, media outlets, and international organizations, the government’s super-majority Parliament is expected to push the bill through. Government supporters have also launched a social media campaign in favor of the bill.

However, Broadcasting Commission, Maldives Media Council, and nearly all local media outlets except for one have requested the withdrawal of the bill.
