Court releases MDP member Hussain Hassan after arrest at drug operation scene

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Assembly member and former journalist Hussain Hassan has been released by the Criminal Court after being arrested during a police drug operation in Male'.

Hussain was taken into custody late last night after entering the scene of the operation and attempting to take photos and videos. According to police, he defied instructions not to interfere with the operation and tried to photograph evidence, leading to his arrest on charges of disobedience to police orders and obstructing police duty.

When presented before the Criminal Court today, the court decided not to extend his remand, ordering his release instead.

Opposition MDP condemned the arrest, calling it “brutal” and demanding Hussain’s immediate release. Hussain currently serves as president of the party’s Gaafu Alifu Villingili constituency and chairs its Youth Courage Media Committee. He is also a former member of the Maldives Media Council.

Police have not yet disclosed details of the drug operation in which he was arrested.
