Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced that employers who neglect expatriate workers will face fines of MVR 50,000 per employee starting Monday.
In a statement, the ministry said the measure follows amendments to the Employment Act passed in August last year. Employers found guilty of neglect will also have their details disclosed publicly.
Under the law, violations include:
- failing to pay salaries,
- not providing basic services required by regulation,
- exploiting expatriate workers,
- or employing them outside the roles they were recruited for.
Repeat offenders may face fines exceeding MVR 100,000 and suspension of services related to foreign workers.
The ministry confirmed the new rules will be enforced through the Xpat portal, and employers will be denied access to its services until fines are settled.
