Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun efforts to gauge the condition of the domestic airports that were previously under the Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) and have now been transferred under them. MACL will be assessing the condition of these domestic airports and bringing about necessary improvements.

The work, led by MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, will include visits to nine domestic airports by members of MACL's ExCo and technical teams. During the visits, the condition of the airports will be monitored, and areas needing improvement will be identified, MACL said.

The company said that last week, the teams travelled to Fuvahmulah Airport, where they met with staff and observed the airport's status.

The dissolving of RACL, and transferring its responsibilities to MACL in order to bring down State expenditure was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu about one year ago.

The airports were handed over to MACL last month.

Shareef has previously revealed that when MACL took over operations of the domestic airports, the airports had been in very poor condition. He said that firefighting equipment in some airports had been in such bad condition that it would prove impossible to continue operations without urgent maintenance and repairs.

MACL is now procuring the equipment and facilities necessary for these airports.
