Fast forward fifty years, the nation has transformed into a premier tourist destination, with its economy relying heavily on the tourism industry. One of the most notable figures in this transformation was Koligey Mohammad Umar Maniku (MU Maniku), who passed away this morning at the age of 78.

The passing of one of the shareholders of Universal Enterprises, the country’s largest tourism company, has cast a dark shadow over the community, bringing profound sadness to the nation.

President Mohamed Muizzu stated that MU Maniku had performed commendably in advancing and strengthening the country’s tourism sector. He stated that Maniku’s dedication and contributions elevated the Maldives into a globally recognized destination. Former President Mohamed Nasheed also stated that MU Maniku was one of the major stakeholders in shaping the Maldives as it is today.

The first tourist group to arrive in the Maldives stayed in Malé City and arranged diving trips to nearby islands. MU Maniku, who oversaw the development and daily operations of the country’s first resort, Kurumba Village, was later assigned to manage it. The government eventually auctioned the property, upgraded it to five-star status, and it became the Maldives’ first luxury resort.

Mohamed Ali Janah, advisor to President Muizzu and an expert in resort development, stated that Maniku’s legacy is invaluable.

“His pioneering initiatives in business and tourism have left a lasting mark, and his legacy will endure for generations to come. May Allah SWT grant him eternal Jannathul Firdous, and may his family find strength and solace in this time of grief,” he stated.

Former Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom reflected that although MU Maniku was not the sole shareholder involved in establishing tourism, he was indeed a major contributor to the sector’s growth in recent decades.

Former Speaker of Parliament and Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid stated that Maniku played an important role in every stage of the industry’s development since its introduction.

“The late MU Maniku flew directly to foreign countries to attract tourists and airlines to the Maldives,” Shahid stated. “He initiated various measures at multiple levels to ensure that our tourism sector remains one of the world’s premier destinations.”

Mohamed Firaq, head of Inner Maldives, one of the country’s leading tour operators, stated that Maniku’s name will remain written in the history of the nation as one of its true builders.

Historian Ahmed Ala Didi also stated that MU Maniku and his family played a vital role in awakening the Maldives to modernity and progress, thanks to the economic foundations laid during that era.

Prominent tourism businessman Ibrahim Mohamed Didi (Simdi Didi) stated that MU Maniku earned the title “the one who built the paradise of the world” through his tireless work in developing the industry.

“As the co-founder of Kurumba Maldives, the nation’s first resort, he played a pivotal role in establishing Maldivian tourism in 1972, a historic milestone,” he stated.

MU Maniku was also a key figure in shaping tourism policy, with every government seeking his expertise. Ali Waheed, who served as Minister of Tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic, stated that Maniku’s advice proved invaluable.

“The guidance he offered during the difficult Covid period had a significant impact on the decisions to close and reopen the borders,” Waheed stated.

Beyond tourism, Maniku was also a generous philanthropist. Through the Universal Foundation, he funded numerous scholarships, particularly for training specialized doctors. He also donated a dialysis machine to IGMH, with training provided at personal expense for those operating it. Former Justice Minister Mohamed Muizzu Adnan stated that, unlike others, Maniku offered assistance discreetly, without seeking recognition.

The tributes pouring in today show that MU Maniku was far more than a pioneer of tourism. He was a nation builder. He stated his advice and insights freely to governments regardless of ideology, stood as a courageous figure in society, and provided unwavering support to the Maldivian people.
