The Independent Institutions Committee (IIC) began reviewing the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill today, with plans to hold a consultation meeting on Monday at 11 a.m. to gather journalists’ feedback. The bill was introduced by Thulhadhoo MP Abdul Hannan.

According to the parliament Secretariat, registered media outlets can send one representative each to attend the meeting. Interested participants must submit a registration form by 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The committee aims to complete its review of the bill by September 15. It has also invited representatives from the Maldives Media Council (MMC), Maldives Broadcasting Commission, Human Rights Commission, and Youth Ministry to contribute their views.

The bill, which has faced criticism for potentially restricting journalists’ work and imposing hefty penalties, was accepted in Parliament yesterday. However, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and government officials have assured that amendments can be proposed during the committee stage.

Notably, the government plans to address concerns raised in the bill and has agreed to remove the powers originally granted to the President under the legislation.
