Man extorts MVR 1 million through scams

Police have arrested an individual for extorting close to MVR 1 million from multiple individuals through scams. 

The accused in the case is Shihan Shiyam, 29, Daylight villa, S. Feydhoo. 

Police said today that a man has been arrested for extorting money from individuals through falsely requesting goods supply over phone calls.

Shiyam was arrested under a court order last Monday in a special operation conducted by the Anti Scam Centre in collaboration with Addu Hithadhoo Police. 

Police said that the operation had been conducted in response to several scam cases reported separately over a number of days. 

Police said that on June 30, Shiyam had called an individual and requested goods supply., and extorted over MVR 30,000 from him. 

Police are also investigating 12 additional cases against Shiyam of extorting money on false claims and stealing through compromising bank accounts.

Over MVR 380,000 obtained under false pretenses has been circulated through his bank account, with the total amount involved in the cases reaching MVR 1 million, Police said. 

When presented in court for his remand hearing, Shiyam has been placed in remand in custody for fifteen days, Police said.
