Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has been awarded the contract to construct 2,000 housing units in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi, as part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to address the island’s housing crisis.

The agreement was signed during the president’s visit to the island, with HDC managing director Ali Zuhair signing on behalf of the corporation and state minister of housing Hassan Rasheed representing the ministry.

President Muizzu said HDC had been contracted for a total of 3,400 housing units, including projects previously awarded, those stalled and now resumed, and the newly announced 2,000 units. He said that work on 400 units had been delayed when his administration took office but has since been handed over to HDC.

“Housing Development Corporation is the most important and largest company in the government, dedicated to housing and infrastructure projects. Therefore, HDC will be responsible for giving high priority to these projects,” President Muizzu said.

Of the 2,000 units, 700 will be three-bedroom houses built for residents on their own land. The remaining 1,300 will be developed on land allocated under the Kulhudhuffushi land use plan.

President Muizzu said construction would begin once beneficiaries were identified, expressing hope that work could start later this year.
