President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that land previously allocated for the construction of a prison in HDh. Neykurendhoo has now been officially handed over to the island’s council for economic purposes.

The land, originally taken by the government 15 years ago, was earmarked in 2010 for the construction of the first prison in the northern region. At that time, 21 hectares were cleared, and trees were removed to prepare the site.

However, the project remained incomplete for years. In 2022, the land was transferred to Unique Choice Pvt Ltd for the same purpose, though development did not proceed as planned.

Speaking during a visit to Neykurendhoo, President Muizzu stated:

“The land that was initially allocated for the prison has now been returned to the island resident's use and handed over to the council.”

The President emphasized that his administration is committed to empowering local communities, and reaffirmed his presidential campaign promise to utilize such land in ways that are economically beneficial to the people.

“If the council submits a well-considered proposal, developed in consultation with the local community, I will grant approval to utilize the land for economic development,” he said.

President Muizzu also noted that the government is working to complete ongoing development projects and will continue to support initiatives that benefit the people of Neykurendhoo.
