Vikaradhoo Council President Abdullah Zameer has praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for fulfilling the promises made during his presidential campaign, particularly regarding decentralization and community development.
Speaking at a community event today, Zameer stated that he was among those who actively advocated for decentralization during the campaign. He emphasized the importance of giving islands the authority to make decisions regarding their own development.
“I always supported the idea that the people of an island should have the power to decide what should be done for their own island,” Zameer said.
He highlighted recent policy implementations as evidence that the President is delivering on his pledges. Among them is the increase in financial support for prescription glasses provided through Aasandha, which has now been increased in line with a campaign promise.
“What we are witnessing today is the realization of campaign promises. The President himself visits the communities and speaks directly with councils, women’s committees, utility providers like Fenaka, and schools to understand and resolve their concerns,”Zameer
Zameer commended the President's personal approach in addressing local issues.
Zameer added that President Muizzu’s direct engagement with communities and his visits accompanied by heads of relevant government agencies is the kind of responsive governance people have long desired.
Development Projects for Vikaradhoo
President Muizzu recently announced several major infrastructure projects for Vikaradhoo, which are scheduled to be included in next year’s budget. These include:
- Work on Vaikaradhoo harbour
- Development of a beach area and swimming track
- Building a football stadium, handball court, outdoor gym, and skate park
In addition, he pledged to commence long-delayed projects such as the 12-classroom building and a multipurpose hall for the island's school. The President said that new classrooms will be ready for use by the next academic year.
