Mezzo Mohamed receives the National Award of Honour posthumously

Mohamed was a highly renowned singer and musician who passed away earlier this year. He served the Maldives' music industry for 48 years.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today conferred the National Award of Honour on Mohamed Majid (Mezzo Mode) posthumously. 

The award was conferred in recognition of Mohamed's contributions in the field of music under the Performing Arts category. 

At the ceremony held in HA. Utheemu to mark National Day, the award was received by Mohamed's daughter Mira Mohamed Majid. 

Mohamed was a highly renowned singer and musician who passed away earlier this year. He served the Maldives' music industry for 48 years. In recognition of this, the government presented him with the National Award of Recognition in the Performing Arts category in 2010 as well. 

Mohamed began his musical career at the age of just 9 with Cobras band in 1977. He released many original songs, and remains one of the most popular music artists in the country. His band, Mezzo, released 40 original songs, in albums 'Guguri', 'Maali', 'Tenth' and 'Listen'. 

Popular songs featuring lyrics from Mohamed's brother, Abdul Majid (Le'Cute Maaji) include 'Kamana goathee Aadhanuthaa', 'Jismu', 'Roanu Edhuru', 'Vehje kamakaa hajjaa hamaey', and 'Elhi kan'dumathi'. 

More recent songs that became public favourites include 'Visnaa Visnaa', 'Uduntharithah' and 'Dhaanehey thi han'dhaan filaa'. 

Of these, 'Visna Visna' was featured on global music channel MTV, the first Maldivian song to receive the honour. 

Mohamed has also performed at many global fairs and shows held to promote Maldives' tourism. He represented the Maldives thrice at ITB Berlin, for which he was presented the Maldives Tourism Golden Jubilee prize. 

Mohamed was highly respected in the music industry and had thousands of fans. Despite his passing, his music continues to make an impact on the people of Maldives. 

Mohamed died of a heart attack at the age of 59 on February 12 this year.
