The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to deploy additional dredgers to accelerate land reclamation and dredging projects in the Malé region.

According to a statement issued today, HDC said the move aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s key presidential pledge to provide a permanent solution to the national housing crisis.

To speed up the ongoing projects, two 45,000-tonne hopper dredgers and one 11,000-tonne hopper dredger are scheduled to be brought into operation by October.

HDC noted that it is working closely with relevant authorities to identify and resolve any potential challenges to ensure uninterrupted progress on dredging works.

Currently, dredging is underway in several key areas, including:

  • Hulhumale' Phase 3
  • Gulhifalhu
  • Giravaru Falhu
  • Uthuru Thila Falhu
  • Rasmale’

Among these, the land reclamation planned for Rasmale’ is the largest in the Malé region to date, making it a major component of the government’s housing and urban development strategy.

The government has announced that 65,000 housing units, including both flats and land plots, will be developed once the dredging is complete.

In his first presidential address to Parliament in 2023, President Muizzu described his five-year term as the “golden age of housing”, reiterating his commitment to solving the long-standing housing challenges faced by Maldivians.
