Work has begun on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu road development project of laying asphalt from the presidential jetty to the market area.
The project was inaugurated today by the minister of construction, Dr Abdullah Muththalib.
The project, valued at MVR 144 million, has been contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). It includes expanding the current road to four lanes and is scheduled for completion within 455 days.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Muththalib said the project marks a significant step in the government's broader efforts to ease traffic congestion caused by the growing number of vehicles in Male'.
To reduce public inconvenience, the construction will be carried out in segments, the minister said.

At the inauguration of the road development project today, Minister of Construction Dr. Abdullah Muththalib announced that the Chinese government will assist in developing all roads in Male' under a free aid agreement.
He stated that the search for a contractor to carry out the technical design work is already underway in China.
Minister Muththalib emphasized that the comprehensive development of the Male City's roads will significantly support the government’s broader efforts to make the capital a more livable and comfortable place for residents.
In addition, the minister revealed that work to redevelop Republic Square will begin soon, while redevelopment of Sultan Park is already in progress. Preparations are also being made to further develop Rasfannu, he said.

Minister Muththalib acknowledged that it would be difficult to carry out the work without causing some inconvenience to the public. However, he urged people to cooperate with the government’s efforts to address Male' traffic congestion.

The road will be closed until October 13 to allow for the expansion project to proceed. Additionally, the nearby lagoon area will be closed for the duration of the construction.
As part of the project, MTCC will also install a new drainage system, pavements, road markings, and signboards to improve traffic flow and safety.
