President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to protect and develop the Madivaru sandbank in AA. Rasdhoo lagoon, ensuring it serves the interests of the local community and supports sustainable tourism.

During a recent visit to AA. Rasdhoo, President Muizzu reiterated his commitment to a key campaign promise, stating that the government would prioritize the protection and development of Madivaru for the people of the island.

"It is my promise to make Madivaru sandbank available for both tourism and community use. I will develop and protect it using geobags, and give it high priority so that you can benefit from it,"

President Muizzu

Madivaru sandbank is a well-known diving and snorkeling site popular among tourists visiting the Rasdhoo Atoll region.

The area was officially designated as a protected zone by the government in October 2018. In 2019, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a directive prohibiting sand mining in the area for both commercial and private purposes.

In 2021, residents of Rasdhoo staged protests against the illegal dredging of parts of the Madivaru lagoon by Veligandu Island Resort, raising concerns about environmental damage.

President Muizzu emphasized that his administration is committed to ensuring sustainable use of such natural assets while empowering local communities to benefit from eco-tourism initiatives.
