In efforts to promote tourism, the ADh. Maamigili Council has sunk a boat near the island's lagoon and created an artificial shipwreck as a tourist attraction.

Maamigili Council member Mohamed Reehaan said that the shipwreck was placed through a project to establish and operate a boat yard. As part of the bid conditions for the project, the selected company must also implement a CSR project.

The three initiatives included in the CSR project are sinking a metal boat, work on the jetty and establishment of an indoor hall.

The bid was won by Gasim Ibrahim. The boat used for the shipwreck is a metal vessel previously used in operations by his company, Villa Group.

According to Reehaan, the council members agreed to incorporate the shipwreck setup into the CSR efforts to help promote tourism on the island.

The island currently has seven guesthouses in operation, with more under development.

Reehaan recognized that more youth are now engaging as they see the importance of tourism for the island's development.

Shipwrecks are a popular attraction for both tourists and locals, many of whom visit such sites for sightseeing and even snorkeling. One of the main such attractions in the country used to be Vaavu shipwreck, which got damaged and washed away during the recent heavy rains.
