Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has submitted a parliament privilege case against Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel.

The case was submitted alleging that Khaleel had responded with a falsehood to a question posed to him by an MP during last Wednesday's parliament sitting.

Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Nazil had asked Khaleel if he had worn an 'India Out' t-shirt during the 'India Out' campaign. In response, Khaleel had stated that he would not have been seen in an 'India Out' t-shirt in any social media photos.

"None of you would have seen me wearing an India Out t-shirt on social media," Khaleel said then.

He added that he might have, however, been spotted wearing a t-shirt related to Maldives' sovereignty and independence.

"I am proud of that. It is something I am proud of in defence of our independence. So that you would you have seen. I have always believed that there should be close ties between India and Maldives," Khaleel responded.

However, submitting the case against Khaleel, Meekail attached a photo showing Khaleel wearing a face mask and an India Out t-shirt. Meekail said that the photo had been taken during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He cited this and alleged that Khaleel had lied in his response in parliament on Wednesday.

The India Out campaign was led by then major opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) during the previous MDP administration.

As per the parliament regulations, a Privileges case must take precedence over any other cases except those with a set deadline. Hence, it is believed that the case will be addressed in today's parliament sitting.
