Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources is going to conduct a course designed to boost interest amongst youth in the fisheries sector.
The three month training programme will be conducted through World Bank aid under the Transforming Fisheries Sector in South West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project.
The ministry said that five youth interested in pursuing careers in fisheries will be granted slots in the first round of the programme. The chosen five youth will also be provided an allowance through out the duration of the course.
The ministry said that the aim of this is to promote interest amongst youth in the fisheries sector, and facilitate training and educational opportunities within the sector.
In addition to providing technical information about fisheries, the course will also offer opportunities to engage in fishing activities, the ministry said.
This includes an opportunity to learn pole and line fishing for skipjack tuna from some of the most seasoned fishermen in the country through working alongside them on a fishing vessel, the ministry said.
Interested youth can send in applications until September 30. The ministry said that a copy of the ID card and the completed application form can be sent via email.
