Twenty-four recipients of Zakat Fund scholarships were awarded letters at a ceremony held last night at the Islamic Centre.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef presented the certificates.
Islamic Ministry said 27 applications were received including 18 for higher education and nine for special scholarships. Of these, 17 students received full scholarships, six were granted stipends, and one received tuition support.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the initiative will play a key role in training more professionals in religious fields.
He added that the country would benefit greatly from students who complete their studies through this program, and urged recipients to make full use of the opportunity.
Zakat Fund reintroduced higher education scholarships this year after a seven-year gap. A total of 50 slots were announced on April 14, 20 for local higher education and 30 for study abroad, including 13 special scholarships.
Study opportunities have been opened at Maldives National University, Islamic University of Maldives, as well as institutions in Malaysia, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and SAARC countries. Of these, 17 slots are allocated for Malaysia and Brunei.
Ten additional opportunities are offered to students studying Sharia, Tafsir, Hadith, Arabic, Ulumul Quran, Usul-ud-Deen and other Islamic subjects to help cover costs not borne by their institutions (stipend).
Priority is given to applicants listed in the register of poor and needy, those without financial means, and candidates with notable service to the country.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, visa costs, stipends, booking allowances, and round-trip airfare.
